Weather at The Cabin on the Canal

Pack for the high desert — big swings between day and night.

Sunriver sits at about 4,160 feet in the Central Oregon high desert, so weather here runs cooler and drier than the Willamette Valley, with big swings between day and night. Pack layers no matter the season.

Current Conditions & Local Events

Winter (Dec–Mar)

Cold and snowy, with daytime highs often in the 30s°F and nights well below freezing. Mt. Bachelor is a short drive away for skiing and snowboarding. Roads around the cabin can be snowy or icy — pack boots for your pup and warm layers for yourself. The canal may have ice at the edges, so keep dogs on leash near the water.

Spring (Apr–May)

Unpredictable and mild, ranging from snow flurries to sunny 60°F days within the same week. Mornings are cold; afternoons can be warm. Good layering weather for dog walks.

Summer (Jun–Sep)

Warm, sunny, and dry, with daytime highs in the 80s°F and cool evenings in the 40s–50°F — perfect hot tub weather after sunset. This is peak season for floating the Deschutes River and paddling the canal. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in late summer; watch the sky if you’re out on the water.

Fall (Oct–Nov)

Crisp and colorful, with cooling temperatures and the first snow usually arriving by late November. A beautiful, quieter time to visit with the dogs before winter sets in.

Central Oregon weather can change quickly — always check the forecast a day or two before you travel, especially in winter.
